‘O for a life of sensations rather than thoughts,’ exclaimed John Keats in 1817. This course is dedicated to exploring ways in which writers present sensory pleasure. Concentrating chiefly – though not exclusively* – on the work of Oscar Wilde (Picture of Dorian Gray) and Patrick Suskind (Perfume), we will examine how art and the senses are used to convey atmospheres and aspects of character, and as a platform to consider knotty questions about the relation between mind, body and soul – the things, in short, that make us human. The course promises to be titillating on both a sensory and intellectual level, and will certainly offer you a plethora of justifiable reasons to purchase a new work of art, a bottle of scent or that devilishly elegant silk handkerchief you’ve had your eye on.

*discussion will also cover work by writers including Emily Bronte, Charles Dickens, Anthony Trollope and George Eliot*

This course will be taught in the living room, over 5 weeks, Saturdays 10.30 am – 12.30; and is bought as a package at £325 (sold out)

2 Zoom slots available : (sold out)
