This course is entirely dedicated to one of the greatest literary works of the nineteenth-century and my own personal favourite: George Eliot’s Middlemarch. Written in 1871, the novel deals with such important contemporary issues as political change, education for women, identity, marriage and the changing social structure. It is still deeply meaningful today and this is partly why it has stood the test of time: it is, amongst other things, a series of love stories, an exploration of life in the provinces, and curiously foreshadowing our apparently shrinking world, an investigation into the way all our lives are interlinked. What is perhaps as important is the fact that Middlemarch unpretentiously relates the lives of ordinary people with great beauty and lyricism. “What do I think of Middlemarch?” asked the great American poet, Emily Dickinson: “What do I think of glory?” I could not agree more. I look forward to being able to share with you my passion for the writing and ideas of this exquisite novel.

This course runs over 5 sessions and is bought as a package at £299 – this includes resources and refreshments in the break.
