In this course we explore one of the great elegiac novels of the mid-twentieth century. In Brideshead Revisited, an outsider is adopted by a wealthy family and is spellbound by their glamorous lifestyle, yet also exposed to unsuspected worlds of pain, conflict and loss. We will explore the ways in which Waugh works within and beyond the English country-house novel tradition and his mapping of complex relationships of sex and class. Furthermore, we will explore the extent to which the novel is a lament for a lost English Golden Age of power, influence and beauty, destroyed forever by war and social change.
This course runs over 5 consecutive Zoom classes. Saturdays am (10.30 – 12) £299
