Christmas Bite: Ethan Frome
10 December 2020,10:00 am - 12:30 pm£68
‘A sad tale is best for winter’, says Mamillius, Hermione’s son in The Winter’s Tale, and Wharton’s short novel, Ethan Frome is certainly a good test case of his thesis. Set in the austere winter countryside of New England, the novel centres around the forbidden love of Ethan and his wife’s cousin, the beautiful Mattie Silver – forbidden because Mrs Frome, the sour-faced Zeena, is not dead. Though very different in tone from Wharton’s New York novels, Ethan Frome, in its intensity and brevity, make it one of American fiction’s finest and Wharton’s most widely read book.
To lighten the tone, the fire will be blazing, the mince pies will be baking and Cecily will be dancing (well, at least in her sleep…) Come and join us and we can laugh and cry together.
This is a single class, running from 10 am- 12.30 (£68), and will be taught in the living room
