Festive Bite: ‘The Dead’, James Joyce
10 December 2019,10:00 am - 12:30 pm£55
Widely considered one of the most significant short story collections of the 20th century, ‘Dubliners’ is a rich tapestry of life and death in Dublin of the early 1900s. In this one-off session, we will focus on the last tale in the collection, ‘The Dead’. Set at, or just before the feast of the Epiphany, this is the story of a man’s epiphany about his relation to the world and, despite its rather morbid title, exudes a warmth and lyricism that sets its apart from other tales in the collection. Together we shall discuss key ideas and explore stylistic threads; if you’re looking for an entry point into Joyce, I can’t think of a better opportunity; this is a very special tale and unlike his later work, Ulysses, it can be read without having to access Wikipedia every two seconds!
This class runs from 10 am – 12.30 pm and costs £55 (this includes resources and tea and cake in the break)
