Fin de siecle Angst (Part ii): Heart of Darkness
21 November 2020,10:30 am - 28 November 2020,12:30 pm£130
The nineteenth-century fin de siècle proved a catalyst for a series of anxieties that emerged during the Victorian period. Loss of religious faith, rise of the occult, fears about the effects of an expanding metropolis and a declining Empire, apocalyptic predictions for the future and concern about technological advances all found expression in one of the most enduring narratives of the period, Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. In this course we will discuss the novella as a creative response to the contexts in which it was written and as a key literary event directing the form of the novel in ways that anticipated the modernism of the early twentieth century.
As the dark nights draw in, this course will warm you up for winter.
This class will be taught in the living room, over 2 weeks, Saturdays am, 10.30-12.30; bought as a package at £130
