Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea
28 February 2019,10:00 am - 28 March 2019,12:15 pm£240
I first read Jane Eyre as a teenager and was immediately captivated by the rebellious spirit of Jane’s voice and her journey from downtrodden outsider to mistress of all she surveys. Jane got to have it all. Or did she? In this course you will have the opportunity to see the novel as both a liberated portrait of female desire and as a darker engagement with issues of sex, power and race. In the final two weeks of the course we will turn to Jean Rhys’ critically acclaimed prequel to Jane Eyre, Wide Sargasso Sea; here the romance of Bronte’s novel comes crashing down, as Rhys makes, Bertha, Rochester’s attic bound Creole wife, centre stage. Placed next to Rhys’ revisionist masterpiece, the resoundingly triumphant assertion with which Jane Eyre closes her narrative, ‘Reader I married him’, strikes a less reassuring note.
This course runs over 5 weeks and is bought as a package at, £240
