Awe inspiring in its density of allusion and encyclopaedic detail, Moby Dick is one of the greatest literary achievements of the nineteenth century. This course will guide you through the novel’s expansive seas, exploring its presentation of ambition and demagoguery through the infamous character of Captain Ahab; its more philosophical mediations on mysticism and fate; and how it works as an allegory of American history.

This is the first in a new course series devoted to a selection of key texts of nineteenth-century America (future courses will include Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson; Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe).

This course runs over five consecutive Zoom classes. Thursdays am (10.30 -12), £299
