In this 2-part course we begin with one of Shakespeare’s major tragedies, ‘King Lear’ (Part 1), and end with one of his last plays, often described as a tragicomedy, ‘The Tempest’ (Part 2). Both plays deal with similar themes but in the later play Shakespeare gives his characters a second chance. ‘The Tempest’ one of Shakespeare’s most beautiful plays turns the darkness of King Lear’s suffering into something much more hopeful, uplifting, even magical. You should have a good understanding of both plays by the end of the two-part course, plus a solid introduction to the nature of Renaissance tragedy and comedy.

Part 1, King Lear, Thursdays  (10.30 am – 12.30 pm); 4 classes hosted by Zoom. £260. Part II, The Tempest runs in the summer term and is purchased separately.
