The Go Between
30 April 2022,8:00 am - 21 May 2022,5:00 pm
Free
In this course we explore one of the great elegiac novels of the mid-twentieth century, The Go-Between. This is the story of thirteen year old, Leo Colston, an outsider ‘adopted’ by a wealthy family, spellbound by their glamorous lifestyle, yet also exposed to unsuspected worlds of pain, conflict and loss. We will explore the ways in which L P Hartley works within and beyond the English country-house novel tradition and his mapping of complex relationships of sex and class. Furthermore, we will explore the extent to which the novel is a lament for a lost English Golden Age of power, influence and beauty, destroyed forever by war and social change. The Go-Between makes a fabulous companion to Waugh’s novel Brideshead Revisited and, arguably, gives it more than a run for its money.
This course runs on Saturdays am (10.30-12.30) over 4 weeks, beginning 30th April; first and third class in-person, the two remaining over Zoom. £260.
